Meet our Co-Founder & Chief Architect

Dr. Stefan Birrer

Dr. Stefan Birrer is the inspiration behind the Phenix technologies. Under his leadership the company delivers unparalleled viewing experiences with near-zero latency, at broadcast scale and superb quality.

 

A recognized authority on video streaming technology and networking, Dr. Birrer has also been an entrepreneur for almost two decades. He has developed and guided several projects from concept to market, highlighted by companies servicing hundreds of thousands of active monthly users and 24/7 availability.

He led real-time communication and video streaming projects at Skype and Rabbit, built financial and chat systems at Barclays and performed engineering research for IBM. 

 

His research has produced over a dozen peer-reviewed papers and patents covering peering technologies and distributed systems. Dr. Birrer is the recipient of the Siemens Building Technologies Scholarship (2001) and the Mueller Martini Foundation Award for Culture, Science and Education (1997). In 2001, he received his B.S. in Computer Science from the University for Applied Science Aagau, Brugg­-Windisch (Switzerland), and both his M.S. (2004) and Ph.D. (2007) in Computer Science from Northwestern University with focus on scalable live video streaming. In 2021 he was awarded as a Greater Zurich Honorary Ambassador.
